Individual Therapy

Individual therapy in NYC: an hour that belongs only to you

Individual therapy in NYC with Rubina is fifty minutes a week where you do not have to look after anyone else, perform being fine or explain your family before you are allowed to feel something.

People come to individual therapy for many reasons. Anxiety that will not switch off. A low mood that has lasted too long. Grief. A marriage that has become lonely or frightening. A decision you cannot make. Or simply the feeling that you have been the strong one for so long you no longer know what you want. You do not need a diagnosis or a crisis to begin. You only need to be a little ready to be honest with someone who will not judge you.

When your marriage is the thing you can't talk about

Many people, especially women, start individual therapy because of their marriage. Some are unhappy but unsure whether they are allowed to be. Some are quietly considering divorce and have not told a single person. Some have a partner who refuses couples counseling. Individual sessions give you a private place to think clearly about what you want, what you can live with and what you cannot, without pressure in either direction.

Considering divorce is especially heavy when your family, faith or community sees it as failure or shame. Rubina will not push you to stay or to leave. She will help you understand your own feelings, think through the practical and emotional consequences, and make a decision that is truly yours. If you and your partner are both willing, couples counseling may be an option alongside this work.

If you feel like you are walking on eggshells

Some relationships are not just unhappy; they are controlling or emotionally abusive. You may be constantly monitoring your partner's mood, apologizing for things you did not do, being told you are too sensitive, or being kept from money, friends or family. Emotional abuse can be hard to name, particularly when there is no physical violence and when everyone around you says the marriage looks fine.

Therapy can help you make sense of what is happening, rebuild trust in your own perceptions and plan for your safety. Couples counseling is usually not recommended when one partner is afraid of the other, so individual work comes first. If you are in danger, please reach out right away: call 911, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call the New York State Domestic and Sexual Violence Hotline at 1-800-942-6906, available around the clock.

How Rubina works one-on-one

Rubina listens first. She does not use one method for everyone. Depending on what you bring, she draws on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), trauma-focused approaches, mindfulness and self-compassion work. Most importantly, she pays attention to your culture, your family and your history, because those shape what will actually help.

Some sessions are about understanding where a pattern came from. Others are practical: a script for a hard conversation, a way to calm your body when panic rises, a plan for the week. Over time, clients often describe feeling lighter, clearer about what they want and less ruled by guilt.

Personal therapy: a private place to talk to someone

Some people call it personal therapy, some call it personal counseling, and some simply want someone to talk to who is not a friend or a relative. Individual therapy is all of those: a private, confidential hour that belongs to you. You can come with a clear problem or just a feeling that something has to change.

Not everyone comes because something is wrong. Personal growth therapy — understanding your patterns, your choices and what you actually want — is just as welcome here. So is working on a relationship on your own. When a partner will not come, individual relationship counseling can still change how you show up, what you accept and what you ask for.

If you have been looking for an individual therapist near me, Rubina offers in-person therapy in New York City and private sessions online across New York State. The practice is private pay, so there is no insurance company in the room; see fees.

Questions people ask

Do I need to know what is wrong before I start?

No. Many people begin with "something isn't right" and figure out the rest in sessions. That is a perfectly good place to start.

I'm thinking about divorce but haven't told anyone. Can I talk about that confidentially?

Yes. Sessions are confidential, and Rubina will not contact your partner or family. She will help you think it through without pushing you in either direction.

How do I know if my relationship is emotionally abusive?

Signs include constant fear of your partner's reactions, being controlled around money or friends, regular humiliation, or being made to doubt your own memory. Therapy can help you sort through what you are experiencing. If you feel unsafe, call 911 or the NY hotline at 1-800-942-6906.

How long does individual therapy last?

It varies. Some people come for a focused stretch of eight to twelve sessions; others stay longer to work on deeper patterns. You decide together with Rubina.

Can I switch to couples therapy later?

Sometimes. If your partner wants to join, Rubina will talk with you about whether she should see you as a couple or refer you to a colleague so your individual space stays yours.
