Therapy cost in NYC without insurance: fees and what to expect

If you are wondering about therapy cost in NYC without insurance, here is everything up front: what each session costs, how payment works, and what happens if you need to cancel.

Money is one of the most common reasons people put off therapy, and one of the least talked about. Rubina would rather you know the numbers before you book than feel surprised afterward. If something here is unclear, send a message and the team will answer plainly, with no pressure.

Sessions in Spanish with Yasmeyris Veras, BSW, a supervised social work intern, are offered at a lower fee; details are on the Spanish-language page. The online group program for South Asian women is $35 per session, or $497 for all 8 weeks (16 sessions).

Insurance: why this is a private-pay practice

Reflections with Rubina does not accept or bill health insurance. Every session is paid directly by the client. This keeps your care between you and your therapist: there is no insurer deciding how many sessions you get, and no diagnosis has to be sent to a company in order for you to be seen.

If you have out-of-network mental health benefits, you can call your insurer and ask whether they reimburse sessions with a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and what paperwork they need. Then ask the practice what documentation it can provide for your situation. Reimbursement decisions are made by your insurer, not by the practice, so it is worth checking before you rely on it.

How payment works

Payment is due before your scheduled session, unless you have agreed something different with your therapist. You can pay:

  • Online when you book a session, by card
  • By Zelle to (845) 422-0700
  • By cash or check
  • With session credits in your client portal: one credit is $125, and a pack of five credits is $600

Credits are handy if you come weekly; your balance updates as soon as you buy, and sessions are paid from it when you book.

Cancellations and missed sessions

Please give at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. That time is held for you and can be offered to someone else only with enough warning.

A missed appointment without notice incurs a $50 fee, and new appointments are scheduled once that balance is cleared. Life happens, and if something serious came up, tell the team. Repeated no-shows may mean the practice is no longer the right fit.

Your right to a Good Faith Estimate

Under the federal No Surprises Act, clients who are not using insurance have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges before care begins. You can request one at any time. If you are billed noticeably more than the estimate, you have the right to dispute the bill. You can read more at cms.gov/nosurprises.

Is therapy worth the cost?

Only you can answer that, but it may help to think about what the problem is already costing you: sleep, health, work, the atmosphere at home, the weekends lost to dread. Many clients find that a period of weekly sessions followed by a gentler rhythm is manageable, especially with credits. If cost is the barrier, say so. The team can talk through session frequency, the group program, the lower-fee Spanish-language option or self-guided resources such as the Quiet the Storm course and Rubina's book.

What sessions look like

Individual sessions are 50 minutes, couples and family sessions an hour, children's sessions 45 minutes. Rubina sees clients in person in New York City and online across New York State.

Your first appointment is an initial consultation, where Rubina listens, asks about your history and what you want to change, and suggests a plan. After that you book ongoing sessions at the regular rate, weekly or every other week depending on what you need and what works for your budget.
